What is the ministry of the two witnesses?
The two witnesses will have special authority by God to testify to the truths in the city of Jerusalem. Their names are not mentioned; therefore, their identity is open to speculation. Some people believe they are Moses and Elijah, while others think they are Elijah and Enoch. The latter identification is based on the fact that these two men were raptured and did not taste death, because the Bible says that it is appointed for man once to die. However, I believe that the two witnesses are Moses and Elijah. Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration. God gave Moses the power to turn water into blood. Elijah called down fire from heaven and shut the heavens so that it would not rain. Moses represents the law; Elijah represents judgment. While Moses did actually die, his death occurred outside of the Promised Land, and it was not the result of sin or physical deterioration. The Bible testifies, "...his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated" (Deuteronomy 34:7). God took Moses' life and the Lord Himself buried him.
I also believe the two witnesses are Moses and Elijah because of the Lord's statement that a prophet cannot die outside of Jerusalem. Therefore, these two prophets will have to come to Jerusalem, die there and, after three days, resurrect and ascend into heaven.
