DENMARK - Highest Retirement Age Worldwide

Arno Froese

Denmark is set to have the highest retirement age in Europe after its parliament adopted a law raising it to 70 by 2040.

The new law passed with 81 votes for and 21 votes against.

However, last year Social Democrat Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the sliding scale principle would eventually be renegotiated.

Retirement ages around Europe vary. Many governments have raised the retirement age in recent years to reflect longer life expectancy and to tackle budget deficits.

The standard pension age in Italy is 67, although as in the case of Denmark, this is also subject to adjustments based on life expectancy estimates and may increase in 2026.

And in France, a law was passed in 2023 that raised the retirement age from 62 to 64.

Arno's Commentary

While there is much opposition, facts demonstrate the necessity of raising the retirement age, primarily due to increased life expectancy.

WorldPopulationReview.com lists life expectancy for major industrialized nations: Japan 84.8; Canada 84.2; Switzerland 84.1; Italy 83.9; France 83.5; Israel 83.1; UK 82.2; US 80.9.

There is another reason: “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17). While there are great differences of opinion regarding the definition of riches, we know that the world has never been as rich as today. The standard of living continues to rise year after year. In olden days, traveling the world was reserved for the ultra-rich, but is now a reality for ordinary laborers.

We must not forget to mention that in the end, the whole system is going to collapse. Regardless of whether rich or poor, educated or simple, dying young or dying old, Hebrews 9:27 declares: “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”
