ISRAEL - AI-Model Predicts Lighting Wildfires
Designed with wildfire prevention in mind, the AI can predict the timing and location of wildfire-inducing lightning strikes with over 90 percent accuracy, according to a test performed using wildfire data from 2021.
“Machine learning offers the potential to revolutionize how we predict and respond to lightning-ignited wildfires, providing insights that could save lives and preserve ecosystems,” said project co-lead Oren Glickman.
According to the study, published in Scientific Reports, the Bar-Ilan University model is much more accurate than traditional wildfire prediction methods, thanks to its unique utilization of satellite and weather data. They say this model could help emergency services thwart wildfires in a much safer, more effective manner.
As fellow researcher Assaf Shmuel notes: “With the growing implications of climate change, new modeling tools are required to better understand and predict its impacts; machine learning holds significant potential to enhance these efforts.”

Arno's Commentary
Israel, with sparse precipitation, has experienced wildfires repeatedly. How accurately this machine will predict lightning strikes is yet to be seen.
One thing becomes clear: mankind—with Israel again at the forefront—tries desperately to control the climate. That, incidentally, has become the great cause globally. Will it succeed? If it does, temporarily, mankind will glory in himself and his intelligence.
Regarding future weather analysis: “He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?” (Matthew 16:2-3). This type of weather prognosis has now been superseded by weather satellites and Doppler radar. It is relatively accurate when one follows the cloud patterns toward the observer’s location. Yet there is no such thing as 100% accuracy.
Job 37:5-6 reads: “God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend. For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.” Ultimately, the Creator was, is, and will be in control, not only of planet earth but also the universe.
