USA - The Rise of Christian Nationalism

Arno Froese

A new survey by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) has revealed a striking correlation between Christian nationalism and authoritarian views in the United States.

While PRRI presents itself as nonpartisan, its funding sources and research topics suggest a focus on issues often associated with progressive causes.

Christian nationalism advocates for the United States to be an explicitly Christian nation. This ideology has gained prominence in recent years.

Experts warn that the correlation between Christian nationalism and authoritarianism poses risks to American democracy.

Concerns include potential undermining of church-state separation and increased political polarization. The impact on religious freedom for non-Christians is another worry expressed by scholars.

Christian nationalism has deep historical roots in America, despite the Founding Fathers’ commitment to religious pluralism.

The ideology has experienced resurgences at various points in U.S. history. Notable periods include the 1930s, 1950s Cold War era, and the rise of the Moral Majority in the late 1970s.

The PRRI survey highlights the complex interplay between religious ideology and political views.

It raises important questions about the future of American democracy and the balance between religious freedom and secular governance.

Arno's Commentary

The Bible does not provide for the existence of a “Christian nation.” Why not? Jesus reveals the Church with these words: “Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32). He adds: “For many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14). The Church is a minority.

The Church is strictly instructed to be obedient to the prevailing government in Romans 13 (see also 1 Peter 2:13 and Hebrews 13:17). If the Church becomes the government, as it was during the later Roman Empire, then the Church has to be obedient to itself!

The “Christian nation” is based on misunderstanding. Thirty-five sovereign countries were founded on the North and South American continents, after being conquered and subjugated by Europeans, of whom the overwhelming majority were Christianized (not necessarily Christian). The attempt to create a “Christian nation” will only produce a diametrically opposed anti-Christian nation with horrible consequences.

Let each of us continue to pray for our respective government. Keep in mind there is a target for the prayer; we are advised to pray for the authorities in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, but note the last sentence: “that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”
