Spiritual Strength For Each Day
“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39).
There are people who say, “I go to church, and that is enough for me.” What sort of people are these? Mostly those who are satisfied with a Sunday church service. With such Christians, I often find that their desires, apart from a certain religiosity, go in another direction. A person who has no hunger for the Word of God, even if he calls himself a Christian, should ask himself whether he is born again. All too often such people try to erase the border between the world and discipleship. You may be asking indignantly, “Can’t I do anything anymore? Can’t I go to the cinema, see a good film, dance?” I would answer, “Go as often as you feel the need for it.” But this is the point. The direction in which your appetite leads you is an infallible measure of how much of Jesus you really have. Those who have experienced a true rebirth can no longer go with the world. They are in the world but not of the world. Jesus Christ has become the content and the goal of their whole lives. For this reason, they cast from them all that would hinder them in the pursuit of this goal.
