Spiritual Strength For Each Day

“Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few” (Ecclesiastes 5:2).

“Never again!” you have probably said before the face of the Lord in prayer, and yet a short time later you were in the same situation again. “I never want to commit this sin again, Lord,” you pray, but perhaps you have never let go of it, and you remain bound to it. Why do we often promise the Lord so much, and yet we do not keep our promises? It is because our decisions are made on an emotional level. Nothing is so changeable as our feelings. We soon forget the Lord and what we promised Him. “Well,” you may say, “I can’t help it. That’s just the way I am.” This is no excuse, however. You may be weak, but you don’t have to remain weak. The Lord has given you a mighty, miracle-working weapon so that you can become free of your emotional nature: the sword of the Word of God, which divides spirit and soul. Yet one thing must be clear: a theoretical agreement with the Word does not produce this division between soul and spirit. If this division really does take place, however, our vows take on eternal validity before the face of the Lord.
