Spiritual Strength For Each Day

“This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground” (John 8:6).

An adulteress is brought before Jesus by her accusers. The Lord appears to be in an irresolvable dilemma, because the righteousness of God must be completely satisfied. If your conscience accuses you and says you are guilty before the holy face of God, accept it to be true, for God is holy. But see the wonderful solution Jesus had for this adulterous woman. “Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.” It is as though He wanted to say, “Yes, this woman has sinned, but I am stooping, bending down, humbling down in her place.” Did He write words of grace on the ground? We suspect this is the case, for immediately after His statement He said, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” As a result, they all went away, convicted. Jesus got up and said, “Hath no man condemned thee?” She answered, “No man, Lord.” “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” This woman found forgiveness and was able to rejoice: Jesus had made all things well.
