Spiritual Strength For Each Day
“…Thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name” (Isaiah 62:2).
Whoever uses the name of the Lord Jesus with a cleansed and believing heart, will experience that through this Satan is driven away like lightning. No enemy power can withstand this precious and wonderful name. Abram was alone with his wife Sarai for a long time. They believed God’s Word. He had promised to make a great nation out of them. They waited for decades and remained obedient. They trusted in their God. Then came the moment when God could renew them: “Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham” (Genesis 17:5).
In other words, now you are an individual, but I will multiply you million-fold. When the Word of God can penetrate our hearts; when we believe against all odds, like Abraham, and are obedient to God’s demand, “Walk before me, and be thou perfect” (Genesis 17:1), the Lord will renew our name so that we do not remain alone. The wonderful thing, however, is that God did not just take Abram’s name and change it to Abraham: for God a married couple is an entity. The divine structure of a marriage is that the husband keeps in step with his wife and the wife with her husband. Genesis 17:15: “And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.” So the wife’s name was changed too.
