Spiritual Strength For Each Day
“Our conversation [citizenship] is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20).
The Bible says that we who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ are already in heaven while we still live on earth. We do not have to strive after citizenship because we already have it. What does this mean in actual practice, though? We find the answer in Colossians 2:6: “Walk ye in him.” I must be in Christ, and He in me. In this way I walk in Him. This is the heavenly life. Jesus ascended into heaven, where He now sits at the right hand of God. But He is simultaneously on earth and in heaven. While He sits at the right hand of the Father, He dwells in our hearts through the Holy Spirit, as it says in Ephesians 3:17, “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith.”
In this way we see this wonderful work in action. While you live on earth—body, soul and spirit—the spirit that dwells in your heart by faith is already in heaven. The inevitable result is written in 1 John 2:6, “He that saith he abideth in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked.”
