Spiritual Strength For Each Day
“It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep” (Psalm 127:2).
This verse not only says that it is better to sleep soundly than to be awake and idle, but also something quite different. I don’t know if you have ever noticed what the Bible says about sleep. It is not true that sleep only serves to restore our bodies. In this text, “so he giveth his beloved sleep,” we see a much deeper, more significant function of sleep than exclusively physical restoration. Sleep is a heavenly gift. It softly turns off our consciousness. Simultaneously, God comes to the unconscious soul as a place where only He and His angels have access. It is, therefore, recommendable that you take to heart the words of Psalm 63:6 when you lie down to sleep, “When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.”
In other words, let your soul be with the Lord. Commit your life to Him, coupled with the request for His peace in the hours of your sleep. Then the friendly Creator’s hand will do a deep and far-reaching work of regeneration in your soul, in your spirit and in your body.
