Spiritual Strength For Each Day
“Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded” (1 Peter 2:6).
The Holy Spirit reveals the glory of the Lord Jesus through the simplest pictures; in this case, a stone. It is extremely precious to God. What an unspeakably tender relationship it is between the Father and the Son! We sense something of this when we hear the many statements of Jesus concerning His Father, particularly when He cried in greatest desperation, “Abba, Father…” (Mark 14:36). Or the other way round, when the Father could not restrain Himself any longer and called from heaven, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). In light of this, we are all the more amazed and worship Him for those mighty words, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…” (John 3:16).
Jesus is the elect Cornerstone of the Church, the foundation of salvation determined by God. No man can lay any other foundation. Because He is the Cornerstone chosen by God, we sense something of the mystery of the election of His own, for all who come to Him are chosen in Him, “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4).
