Spiritual Strength For Each Day
“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” (Jeremiah 33:3).
What a mystery the unlimited power of prayer is! I am almost afraid to speak of this, because I feel incapable of putting into words the infinite omnipotence of God that is revealed to the one who prays.
Why should we pray? First, because God the Father tells us to, “Call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me” (Psalm 50:15). Apart from the fact that the Lord takes our cries concerning our outward troubles to heart, the one who begins to read His Word with an open heart inevitably finds himself in inward trouble. And then the command of the Father comes, “Call upon me in the day of trouble.” Secondly, because God the Son urges us to pray, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Matthew 7:7). He, the Son of God, urges us to intensify our prayers. “To ask” is passive, “to seek” is earnest perseverance, and “to knock” means to make our way into the presence of God until He opens the door to the inner sanctuary.
