Spiritual Strength For Each Day

“Fight the good fight of faith” (1 Timothy 6:12).

The fight of faith is understood and practiced by very few. The majority of believers fight but do not fight lawfully, according to the rules. Paul explains in 2 Timothy 2:5, “And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.” It is not the fact that we fight that is decisive, but that we fight according to the rules. This means that we fight with the goal in view. In order to fight the good fight of faith effectively and victoriously, we must first of all know our enemy. Our real enemies are not people of flesh and blood. Ephesians 6:12 tells us, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” It is very shortsighted of us, therefore, to regard people as our actual enemies. The driving force behind human deceit, cunning and hatred is always the powers of darkness. Jesus has conquered the enemies of man on Calvary’s cross and overpowered them. His victory is our victory! To fight the good fight of faith, then, means that we no longer have to fight alone toward victory, but we fight from the accomplished victory of Jesus.
