Spiritual Strength For Each Day

“Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? Let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God” (Isaiah 50:10).

Here is described the experience of a person who fears the Lord and obeys the voice of His servant—Jesus Christ. All those who truly follow the Lord will inevitably have the genuine nature of their discipleship tested, in that they are led through stretches of darkness. He, the Good Shepherd, says of His sheep, “And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice” (John 10:4). Of those who heard Him with their physical ears, however, it says, “…but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them” (John 10:6). Today also, many people do not understand what wonderful depths our Good Shepherd opens us to us when He speaks in this way. It is a mystery. If you adopt the attitude of faith and say, “However dark it is around me and in me, I will listen to His voice and trust in His leading,” then you will be able to exclaim with the Psalmist, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).
