Spiritual Strength For Each Day
“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).
Whoever grasps these words in their whole extent knows the way to eternal life. The Lamb of God is the nucleus of the biblical message. Everywhere in the Bible we meet the Lamb, the perfect Lamb, “And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves” (Genesis 21:28). Seven is the number of divine completion. The seven lambs of Abraham point to the complete gift of God, His Son, the Lamb of God.
David and the whole community sacrificed one thousand lambs. This is ten times ten times ten. The number ten represents the whole of humanity in the Scriptures. Jesus, the Lamb of God who bore the sins of the whole world, is also the Lamb for the individual sinner. I repeat, He is not only the Lamb of God for the whole world, but also for you who are conscious of your sinfulness and corruption. John the Baptist preached repentance and forgiveness of sins to a great crowd. And in the fullness of time, the day came when he suddenly stopped and pointed to a man in the midst of the listening crowds. All eyes were directed on Him, and John cried out, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
