Spiritual Strength For Each Day

“Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? (Jeremiah 23:29).

What is this fire? It is the Word of God that lives and burns in us. Fire is also a symbol for the suffering of the Lamb. We are similarly led to what Jesus experienced and suffered. It is the way of humiliation. He so humbled Himself that He even took upon Himself the form of a servant. For this reason, God has given Him a name that is above all names (cf. Philippians 2:7-9). The fire is a fire of purification, which is a result of our willing and complete surrender, “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:7).

The coming of the Lord Jesus Himself will be the last purification through fire for His children. All our works will be proved by fire when we stand before His judgment seat. Then, all that is earthly, all that is temporal, all that is sinful, will burn. Only the burnt-offering—complete surrender—that is not consumed by fire will remain, for that is “gold, silver and precious stones.”
