SCANDINAVIA - Citizens Advised to Prepare for Survival
Sweden and Finland have updated guidance to their citizens on how to survive war, as NATO allies bolster defense measures against the backdrop of the Ukraine conflict.
Booklets distributed to millions of households in the Nordic nations include instructions on how to prepare for the effects of military conflicts, communications outages and power cuts, as well as extreme weather events.
From stockpiling bottled water and sanitary products, to growing edible foodstuffs at home, government authorities offered tips on how residents could sustain themselves in the event of war. The brochures also include advice for parents and caregivers, instructing people to preserve diapers, medication and baby food.
New advice in the 2024 edition includes tips on evacuation, how to stop bleeding, dealing with anxiety, preparedness for pets, how to speak to children about crisis and war, and how to support especially vulnerable members of the population, added MSB.
Finland’s Ministry of the Interior also issued new crisis guidance, giving readers advice on how to prepare for long power cuts, water outages, telecommunications disruptions, extreme weather events, and military conflict.
Earlier this year, Norway and Denmark—two other members of the 32-party bloc—distributed updated wartime guidance on how people should prepare for potential crises.

Arno's Commentary
The somewhat unexpected invasion of Ukraine by Russia has tilted the table for many, if not all European states. The key word used here is “survival.” That, of course, is nothing new. When checking history, wars have taken place on the European continent almost uninterrupted since recorded history. During ancient times, it started with small kingdoms against one other. Today, giants are involved such as Russia, whose military is resilient as they successfully defeated Napoleon’s invasion, and later Nazi Germany’s aggression.
When we read our Bible, we are reminded of the words of our Lord: “And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet” (Matthew 24:6). Important to note is our Lord’s advice: “see that ye be not troubled.” Our target must not be concentrated on these horrible developments; rather, on the One who holds the future in His hands.
