Spiritual Strength For Each Day

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).

When your heart is encouraged through faith in His promises, you will run the way of His commandments, i.e. you will be healed—as the prophet Jeremiah puts it—from your disobedience. Temptations will still come, of course. It will often be dark on this path, but “though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.” In other words, the path of righteousness often leads through a dark valley. Perhaps you are in this valley now. The valley is dark; you cannot see ahead or behind you. You can only look upwards. But that is sufficient, for the Bible says, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). In this way, we experience the opposite of what the devil wants. He wants you to be afraid in the dark valley and despondent. But the Lord wants to give you fellowship with Himself in the midst of the dark valley. He is your light and your salvation in that moment. Especially then, you have every reason to rejoice instead of being afraid.
