Spiritual Strength For Each Day
“Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; and ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately” (Luke 12:35-36).
To be waiting for Jesus also means being watchful. We can only wait for Him if we are watchful. I remember that years ago I often came home very late from preaching assignments, sometimes at two or three in the morning, but my wife was always waiting for me. I saw from afar that the light was on in the house. A person who is waiting for Jesus is simultaneously a fervent missionary. Therefore, the Lord says, “Let your…lights [be] burning.” Be ready to leave, let your loins be girded about, the Bible says. In waiting for Him, we will be safe in His wonderful work of salvation, “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation” (Hebrews 9:28). Waiting for Jesus is closely connected with His first coming, when He carried away our sins, and with His second coming, to take us unto Himself. The more we are one with Him in His death on the cross, the more we live in the hope that He will come soon. The cross and the crown belong together.
