Spiritual Strength For Each Day
“Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word” (Psalm 119:67).
We see this blessed result of affliction in our own lives. It teaches us to obey the Word. What Word? The Word of our Lord, of which He Himself said, “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63).
This Word imparts to us the whole fullness of God, seeing Jesus Christ Himself is the incarnate Word, and, “In Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9). The prophet Ezekiel was told to eat the Word. In Ruth 2:14 we read, “And she did eat, and was sufficed.”
Every time we eat of the Bread that the Lord gives us, we are refreshed as after a hearty meal. This is because we are satisfied by the Lord’s truth, which Christ reveals to us through His Word. Our hearts find peace through the words of Jesus. He Himself is the unspeakable, lovely object of our longing. Our hope is fulfilled, for in whom could we hope other than in Him who speaks to us? What can we who are afflicted wish for more than that we learn to obey His Word through it and win Christ?
